Thursday surgery went well ....

Just a quick note to let you know that all went well and as planned with the skin grafting surgery on Thursday at Evanston. What a big hospital … wow. Dr. Howard has been great to work with … we really like him. He ended up taking a small skin graft from the right foot, so we didn’t make an incision somewhere new. It has not been as painful as I anticipated. I need to keep my foot up and elevated for 90% of the time for the next week, to allow blood to get to the new skin area.

He said that there was a ton of scar tissue under the incision, so that is probably why the wound wasn’t healing by itself. He mentioned that skin grafting doesn’t always grow the best over scar tissue, although he thought my tissue looked healthy (no infection). He thought that there was a 95% chance that the new skin would adhere & if it doesn’t he said we’d figure something else out …. overall he was pretty hopeful that it would work. No weight on the foot for the first week, to try and give the graft time to heal.

We are back in St. Louis and will return to see Dr. Howard on Wednesday of next week at Glenbrook Hospital …. He said that he’d tell me how long I need to wait to start pt after we see how things look next week. I had a private room at the hospital, but it is good to be home and rest - much quieter. It is a "wait and see" situation now, as we wait to see if the new skin piece will permanently attach over the wound.

I'm thankful for safe travel, good weather, and smart and caring doctors. My mom stayed with the pastor and his wife that married them 38 years ago. They live in the town next to Evanston and have a beautiful home. She had a great time visiting with them and having breakfast on Friday morning. It was a good break for her and a special time for them to reconnect.

Have a relaxing weekend!
