Good news at our doctor appointment today ….
- Had the stitches removed in the arm and foot. There were 70-80 stitches in the foot, so it took quite a while. The stitches in the arm were a bummer to remove, as there is not a lot of “fat” on the inner arm and the incision is long … really tender & I had to tough it out for a few minutes.
- The foot is healing well & it all looks to be staying closed. It wasn’t terribly swollen, which was good. Definitely looked like it had been through a lot, but we expected that. I piled on the baby lotion as soon as we cut off the cast.
- As for the toe movement that I was concerned about, he said not to panic at the moment … more time needed. The possibility for more flexibility should now exist, but he thinks that the toe tendons are so weak that a lot of therapy is going to be needed. He is hopeful that eventually I will be able to move them on my own … still a tiny flicker is possible now. Because we don’t want the toes to forget their job, we are going to start physical therapy soon (probably as soon as the cast comes off). I was glad about this because waiting another four weeks would not be good. Not sure if wearing a shoe is going to happen as soon as I’d like – may need to readjust my thinking in that department.
- The medical assistant commented that the cast that I had removed was super tight; she couldn’t believe that I lasted three weeks in it ….the one now is much better.
- The entire lower leg/foot has a significant amount of atrophy … it is smaller than I have ever seen it. I don’t know if it was ever that small in the 4th grade, but it is now. It looks like I have lost weight in the lower leg and then a lot of lost muscle. What woman doesn’t want a small calf?
My STL surgeon talked to the TX surgeon on the phone when I getting the stitches removed, so the TX surgeon has the latest update. I picked hot pink for the cast color today, although it is more like neon pink (pretty bright). Our next appointment is next Wednesday & the cast then comes off for good. We may start pt next Friday and will do it 3x/week – thankfully it is right next door to my office.
Very thankful and praising God for the good report today. I am going to go back to work on Friday and get some things organized before summer camp starts next Monday.
Thanks for praying .... keep it up, it is working.
Love,
Jenny
